He is also able to sense guilt or innocence due to the presence of the Demon Zarathos. Tommy is also immune to terrestrial diseases.

As Ghost Rider:

  • Superhuman strength (40 tons), agility, stamina, and durability
  • Proficient in hand-to-hand combat skills (brawling)
  • Invulnerability to heat and flame
  • Ability to project regular and ethereal flame (Hellfire)
  • Ability to travel between inter-dimensional realms and along any surface
  • "Penance Stare" (Does not work on creatures with no eyes, symbiotes or beings without souls)
  • Rides flaming motorcycle
  • Wields enchanted chain
  • Can conjure a bike using Hellfire
  • Can channel hellfire through any weapon, usually done through firearms that become wicked-looking versions of themselves when he is Ghost Rider
  • Tommy will change into the Ghost Rider each night after sundown. He can also change at will when innocent blood is spilled.

Weaknesses: Tommy Templeton is a normal human being with the associated frailties. He also does not trust people easily and can be secretive. He can also be bound and summoned in the same ways as a demon.

Personality: Tommy is a nice guy at heart but spends most of his time in bouts of grim reflection bordering on depression. He can fake being “up” and cheerful; sometimes, he even gets there. He’s very charming and flirtatious when he’s not drinking and is a lot of fun to be around, so long as he isn’t “working”.

But most of his thoughts are either upon finding the next sinner to send to hell or his eventual, final trip to hell. He knows he’s damned and most days, he’s come to grips with it. Other days, he desperately hopes that he’ll find an eleventh-hour way to avoid going.

When working, however, he’s secretive and doesn’t care to talk about what he does for a living.

Backstory: Tommy Templeton is the son of Jacob and Jerica Templeton. Tommy grew up in Loving, Missouri. After Jake returned from serving in the US Army, he tried to effect change in the society of his small southern town by opening his own motorcycle and car repair shop. Jake Templeton also founded a motorcycle club, the Devil’s Tribe that helped out the people of Loving in less legal ways when needed. The club did food drives, helped paint houses and generally aided their neighbors in an effort to knit the community closer in friendship. Tommy spent his formative years hanging around the shop with dad and learning to fix cars.

Tommy was devastated when his father was hit by an oncoming truck the day before Tommy's sixth birthday.

Tommy's mother remarried a year later to Clarence "Clay" Clayton, who was Jake Templeton's best friend and second-in-command of the Club and believed that the community should pay tribute to the club for all the good things it was doing for Loving. To this end, Clay got the club into more illegal dealings, eventually involving Tommy when he turned fifteen,.

Tommy grew up rowdy dangerous young man, executing armed robberies, weapons deals and other crimes for the club. Tommy later found out that his father's death was not the accident he first believed and confronted Clay, who denied any involvement. Clay, thinking that Tommy would turn him in or seek retribution, sold out Tommy on the next heist and the club murdered him as a traitor. Upon his death, the demon Mephisto came to Tommy and offered him a choice; die and go to Hell or become his hunter and live.

Tommy chose life and was bound to the demon Zarathos in order to become the new Spirit of Vengeance. He was rescued by a helpful passerby and nursed back to health.

Returning to Loving as the Ghost Rider, Tommy killed every member of the Devil's Tribe except for Clay and Jerica. Learning that they'd set Jake up to die because he opposed turning the club into a criminal enterprise, he gave them both the Penance Stare. Clay died instantly when his heart gave out under the weight of his sins and the torment he’d inflicted upon others.

Jerica remains catatonic in a Jefferson City mental hospital to this day, unable to do anything more than scream and cry. Tommy looted his parents’ home and found a box of materials that indicated he was adopted. He has no idea who his father is but wonders if he will find out before the end of his life.

Now Tommy rides across the backroads of America, searching for sinners to punish. When he isn’t sleeping with the nearest woman he can find, he uses alcohol to dull the pain of what he’s done and as a buffer against the torments of Hell that he always sees.

On his sober nights, he considers this a fair trade for what he does, all the while knowing that someday, Mephisto will drag him screaming back to hell.
